Meet the Artist
Amy Loschiavo is a Fine Artist and Ceramicist on the Central Coast of California. She has a bachelor’s degree in Art & Design from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and a master’s in Education. Amy consistently finds herself inspired by the raw beauty of nature and the idea of bringing the outdoors in. When she is not in the art studio, she usually enjoys the great outdoors through hiking, rock climbing, or walks on the beach. The intricacies and details of plants, flowers, and land features send her reaching for her paints or heading to the studio to craft works of art that capture the essence of life all around us. She hopes to raise enough money to be able to provide joyful art experiences to underprivileged children and adults in her community.
The Process
Ceramics
Two different ceramic processes are mainly used to create these minimalist, organic, and timeless works of art.
The first method is wheel-thrown, in which the clay is centered on a spinning wheel and is carefully pressed and pulled into a symmetrical shape. After hours of drying, the piece is recentered on the wheel and trimmed using metal tools to smooth imperfections. Finally, the piece is kiln-fired twice using food-safe glazes. Amy mainly uses this method to create dinnerware pieces such as plates, bowls, cups, and other items.
The second method is called coil building. This begins with a flattened base of clay. Amy then rolls long snake-like coils of clay by hand and layers them to build up the form. She blends the coils to create organic shapes and eliminate any seams. After days of drying, she smooths imperfections and kiln-fires it twice using glazes, oxide stains, or leaving the clay in its natural color. This method is mostly used for vases, large decorative bowls, planters, pitchers, and other organic shaped items.
Painting
The process of painting begins with seeking inspiration, usually from nature. Amy often brings her paint with her when hiking to paint the view en plein air or she will capture the inspiration through photography.
Wood portals and other forms of wood paintings can take days or even months to complete due to the absorption rate of the wood and the detail required to capture the inspiration while allowing the wood grain to shine. At the moment, Amy feels most drawn to painting captivating landscapes and plants with a minimal and natural color pallet.
After enduring illness from utilizing toxic paint in the past, Amy now only uses non-toxic and earth-friendly paints that do not off-gas or pollute the environment. She is committed to creating beautiful and timeless art that is healthy for her, the people who handle or display the art, and the earth.
